The low down on the Samsung CLX-2160

As we’ve learnt from the budget inkjet printer market a cheap printer doesn’t necessarily mean low running costs in terms of prices of printer cartridges. The normal trick of manufactures is to sell a printer as cheap as possible and then make the profit back on the sale of consumables. Samsung CLX-2160 toner cartridges are cheaper than your usual Samsung toner cartridges but they print less and this reduces there cost per page to around 1.8p black and 8.7p colour which makes the printer slightly more expensive to run than a standard colour laser printer but still good value. Samsung boas that the CLX-2160 is the worlds smallest colour laser multifunction printer and it easy to see why, it amazingly compact for something that packs so much into it. Being a budget printer there must be some downside to the Samsung CLX-2160 being so cheap it’s revealed in the average output quality. Text is quite clear even at small font sizes, but colour printing of images was far from perfect and appeared grainy, dull and flat especially when printing photos. Printing speed is also a victim of the Samsung CLX-2160’s budget price tag, with a reasonable black printing speed of 16ppm but below average 4ppm for colour. Colour printing takes four times as along because the CLX-2160 only have one imaging drum for all of the four colours to share and as result makes colour printing four times slower because it must makes four passes on the imaging drum for each print. This is not really a fault it just always going to be the case and if it where improved the result would be a higher purchase price for the CLX-2160 so its horses for courses. Overall the Samsung CLX-2160 is a designed to fit a very specific market and it delivers pretty well on what it designed to do.
